Primary task:

Explore the informatics characteristics of scientific and technical (S&T) data, and current issues and challenges facing their long-term preservation and access. Together we will gain an understanding of the properties of S&T data and the requirements those properties put on information preservation and access practices.

At the end of the course students will:

  1. Understand the scope of scientific and technical data management practices and issues.
  2. Understand the Semantic Web and Linked Data initiatives, and their use in managing scientific data.
  3. Know the basic informatics requirements of long-term management of scientific data collections.
  4. Have first-hand experience with current and developing areas of research into S&T data management process and practice.

Main themes:

  1. Scientific and technical data: their description, assessment, and preservation.
  2. Current Semantic Web and Linked Data initiatives and practices that focus on S&T data.
  3. Current issues in managing collections of S&T data.
  4. Hands-on use of semantic markup practices on class papers and reports.
