Assignments and Grades:

Grades will be based on the following factors. Late work will be graded off 1/2 of a letter grade per overdue day.

  • Class attendance and participation 15%

Assignments:

  • Due February 6 – One-page proposal defining the collection you have chosen for your preservation needs assessment. Collection must consist of at least 1,000 items. 5%

  • Due February 20 – One-page memorandum to the library/archives director requesting approval for a preservation needs assessment of the collection you have chosen for your project. 15%

  • Due April 9 – Needs Assessment Project 45% (presentation on April 30 counts 5% of the grade)

  • Due April 23 – Two-three page grant proposal to a foundation to preserve the collection you have chosen for your needs assessment. Instructor will provide specifics. 20%

Needs Assessment Project:

Working in a team of two people, you will assess the preservation needs of a discrete collection. The assessment will result in a report which will include a one-page executive summary of the assessment results and a full report of the assessment, including:

  • a brief collection history;

  • an overview of the tools used in conducting the assessment;

  • a full reporting of the assessment results;

  • recommendations for the preservation of the collection; and

  • a cost analysis and budget for the recommended preservation actions.

An oral presentation of the project will be required.

*Assignments 1 and 3 will be done in groups of two people. Both students will receive the same grade on the project proposal, the report, and the oral presentation.
