  1. Understand the variety of purposes for which digitization is used in libraries and archives—from creating exhibits to building enduring collections;

  2. Understand how digital operations function within libraries and archives;

  3. Become familiar with the standards, guidelines, and best practices associated with digitization;

  4. Become familiar with the issues, standards, guidelines, and best practices associated with preserving digital collections—from the point of file creation to archiving; and

  5. Through class discussion, research, and hands-on application, understand and apply benchmarking for digitization and metadata to create digital surrogates.
