Collection Handling Procedures All Collection Materials

DO NOT:

lean on collection material
leave items out that are not in use
have more than a couple of items out at a time for your projects
pile items on top of each other
shuffle loose items to fit them in an enclosure; handle them individually (in
order to prevent small edge tears on photos and papers from becoming worse as
they interlock)

Text and Photographic Materials

Never use ink, correction fluid, or highlighters near collection material.
Never annotate texts or photographs or write on paper placed on top of
collection material.
Use two hands to hold a sheet of paper or photograph or support it with a
piece of stiff card if it is fragile.
Never touch the emulsion side of any photographic image (e.g., print,
negative,
transparency, lantern slide, etc.).
Use two hands to hold a photograph or support it with a piece of stiff card.
DO NOT use adhesive tapes, staples, pins, paper clips, or rubber bands on
text or photographic material.

Cassette Audio Tapes and Videotapes

Minimize handling.
Cleanliness is important because minute debris can cause loss of signal or
dropouts.
Avoid touching the surface of the tape. Oil from skin leaves a residue that
can coat the equipment’s playing head and attract dust.
Take care not to drop tapes.
