TENTATIVE CLASS SCHEDULE

1/Aug 29: Welcome to the class!

    For next class meeting: Portfolio definitions. Locate a unique definition for reader's advisory and post it to BlackBoard by noon on the Friday before the next class meeting (9 September). Choose a definition other than one provided by your textbook. If someone has posted the same definition before you, then seek another definition. The goal is to have a unique definition from each student in class. In addition to providing the full text of the definition, cite the source of your citation following Chicago Manual of Style for citation advice.

2/Sept 5: Labor Day. No class.


3/Sept 12: The Social Nature of Reading; Reader's Advisory: History
  • Review Portfolio definitions
  • Read: Text, Chapter 1, “A History and Introduction”
  • Class discussion: questions related to Chapter 1 (see 'Participation' in Grading for questions)
  • Nominate title for One Book-One Read event; Class vote on title
  • Organize work teams for One Book-One Read event

4/Sept 19: Reference Sources
  • Read: Text, Chapter 2
  • Class discussion: questions related to Chapter 2
  • Share drafts of announcement of One-Book-One Read event. Discuss: dissemination plan

5/Sept 26: Guest Speaker and/or Group on One-Book/One-Read Event

Dr. Roy will be attending the board meeting of the Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums in Honolulu.


6/Oct 3: Articulating a Book's Appeal
  • Read: Text, Chapter 3
  • Class discussion: Questions related to Chapter 3
  • Portfolio: Check. Oral check on five new elements in your Reader’s Advisory Class Portfolio.
  • Symposium Paper statement of intent. Deadline for sending 2 sentences about your proposed symposium paper, including your topic and venue.

7/Oct 10: The Readers' Advisory Interview
  • Read: Text, Chapter 4
  • Class discussion: Questions related to Chapter 4
  • Proposal for Symposium Paper Due

8/Oct 17: Background for Readers' Advisors
  • Read: Text, Chapter 5
  • Class discussion: Questions related to Chapter 5

9/Oct 24: Promoting and Marketing Readers' Advisory Collections and Services
  • Read: Text, Chapter 6
  • Class discussion: Questions related to Chapter 6

10/Oct 31: Guest Speaker and/or Group Work on One-Book/One-Read Event.

11/Nov 7: One-Book –One Read and Other Assignments Review
