Description

This one semester credit hour course introduces
students to the library and information field and to its major concerns
though a selection of readings, panel discussions, and online experiences.
The course is a required of all students in the MSIS program and should
be taken in their first or second semester to
gain the most benefit. It is offered on a Credit/No Credit basis.
The course includes six mandatory class meetings
where faculty panels discuss and respond to questions on the nature of
the information professions, the future of libraries, intellectual property
and copyright, the usability and accessibility of information, the curation
of recorded knowledge, ethics, leadership and advocacy, and more.
Through these activities and experiences
students become familiar with and able to discuss intelligently some
of the literature on these topics.

- To introduce students to the breadth of issues
and perspectives within the information studies fields.
- To orient students to the variety of intellectual
traditions shaping contemporary practices and understandings.
- To encourage student participation in their
own development as information professionals.
- To provide students with an awareness of the
faculty and programmatic resources available to them in the School
of Information.

and Instructor Responsibilities

Student responsibilities:
1. Check and respond to class-specific email, as well as read and respond
to the discussion forum daily or as appropriate.
2. Read, understand, and comply with expectations regarding the UT Policy
on Academic Integrity.
3. Any student with a documented disability (physical or cognitive) who
requires academic accommodations should contact the Services for Students
with Disabilities area of the Office of the Dean of Students at 471.6259
(voice) or 471.4641 (TTY for users who are deaf or hard of hearing) as
soon
as possible to request an official letter outlining authorized accommodations.
Instructor and teaching assistant responsibilities:
1. Respond to e-mail within 48 hours unless otherwise indicated.
2. Assist students as a group or individually with related with the course
content, administrative issues or course-related technological support.
