XML Analysis
Due: October 31 @ Midnight via Blackboard
Please download the following files. It is important that you download them
in the appropriate format (i.e. right-click on the links, then save them onto
your hard drive).
Once you have downloaded these files, complete the following:
- XML Creation: You have been supplied with a plain-text file (thesisAbstract.txt).
Please mark this document in XML, in conformance with the DTD specified by
thesisAbstract.dtd.
- DTD Creation: Create a new DTD by augmenting the existing DTD. Your new DTD should, in addition to those already represented, represent the following
elements of a thesis
- All mathematical terms
- All acronyms
- Descriptions of experimentation
You may choose to model each of these elements however you like. For instance,
your modeling of an experiment might contain sub-elements such as dependent
and independent variables or reports of findings (these are merely examples).
Your grade on this section will rely in part on the degree to which your new
model adds useful information to the text.
- Mark up thesisAbstract.txt according
to your new DTD.
Deliverables
Please submit the following files to Blackboard (in the assignments section):
- The XML file that conforms with thesisAbstract.dtd
- Your new DTD
- The XML file that conforms with your new DTD
All of these materials are due by Midnight on the due date shown
above.
Grading
10 points are possible on this assignment
- 2 Points for successfully linking the DTD to the XML file
- 2 Points for marking up the initial XML file correctly
- 4 Points for creating the new DTD
- 2 Points for adding in the new elements to your existing XML file
A Note on the Data
A thesis abstract describes briefly what a doctoral dissertation is about
and what its findings are. It also gives the dissertation's title, author,
and the people who served as the author's advisory committee. The committee
has one advisor (listed first in the committee information), and one or more
readers.
