Objectives:

This course will introduce students to the concepts of knowledge organization (or "representation," “information organization,” “resource organization,” “classification and cataloging”).

At the conclusion of this course students should

  • Come to an understanding as to why reliable and effective representation is important
  • Know and understand the different ways that different groups represent documents
  • Recognize the challenges and theoretical issues inherent in these different methods
  • Understand the basic methods for creating a classification scheme
  • Be able to recognize and describe different types of representation and organization systems
  • Be able to explain the theory behind tools and systems providing access to documents
